Stuck, or wondering how something works? The answers to the questions readers ask most are below. If yours is not here, write to me and I will answer.

Signing in

I did not get my sign-in code

Codes come from noreply@betweenbooks.net and usually arrive within a minute. Look in your spam or promotions folder first. Each code lasts 10 minutes. If yours ran out or never came, choose Resend code on the code screen.

I forgot my password or my username

On the sign-in screen, choose Forgot your password? or Forgot your username? Either one sends an email to the address on your account. You sign in with your username. We use your email for sign-in codes and recovery.

Why am I signed out on another device?

Each browser keeps its own sign-in. Tick Keep me signed in on a device you trust, and it will remember you there.

Your books

How do I add a book?

Choose Add a book. You can search for it, or type in the details yourself if it can't be found. Free accounts get 50 searches a month. Pro has no monthly limit. Typing a book in by hand is always free.

Can I bring my library from Goodreads or StoryGraph?

Yes. Export your books there as a CSV file. Then open Settings, find Your data and choose Import books. An Excel file works too. Books already on your shelves stay as they are, so importing the same file twice does no harm.

How do progress and status work together?

Update the page you are on and the status follows. A book moves to Reading when you start it and to Read when you reach the last page. If you change the status yourself, the pages follow it instead. Marking a book Did not finish keeps the page you stopped on.

A cover or a detail is wrong

Open the book and choose Edit details. You can fix the title, author, pages, ISBN and the rest. Your version is the one we keep.

Friends and discussions

How do I add a friend?

Open Friends in the sidebar, type their exact username and send a request. Nothing of yours is shared until you choose it in Your sharing settings on the same page. Your reviews and notes are never shared at all.

Someone is bothering me

Every comment and every message from a friend has a Report button, and a person reads every report. You can also block a reader. A block ends the friendship, stops messages both ways and hides your conversation from them. They are not told.

Pro and payments

What happens when my free trial ends?

Every new account gets 14 days of Pro, and we ask for no card. When it ends, nothing is deleted. Extra shelves keep their books and stay readable. They stop taking new books until you subscribe. Pricing shows what Free and Pro each include.

How do I cancel or change my card?

Open Settings and choose Manage subscription. There you can change your card, see invoices or cancel. If you cancel, you keep Pro until the end of the period you have paid for. If you subscribed in the iPhone app, Apple takes the payment. Cancel it in your iPhone's Settings, under your name and then Subscriptions.

Your data

Can I take my library with me?

Yes, whenever you like and on any plan. Open Settings and find Your data. The JSON file is the fullest copy you can download. It holds your whole library, but not your support messages or logs. Write to us if you want more. The CSV holds your books with your reviews, thoughts and notes, for a spreadsheet. It leaves out your messages, comments and reading journeys.

How do I delete my account?

Open Settings, find Your data, type your password and choose Delete account. It removes everything for good and cannot be undone, so download your data first if you want to keep it. We cancel a card subscription for you before we delete. An iPhone app subscription is with Apple, so cancel that one yourself first. The privacy policy says what we store and for how long.

The text is too small, or the page moves too much

Open Settings and choose Open reading controls. You can change the text size, the spacing, the page colours and the animation. Your choices stay on that device.
